Ecosystems
Northern bats have good hearing and they often listen for sounds made by their insect prey. They also use echolocation to locate insects resting on leaves, tree trunks, or on buildings. They live in the northern region (as seen on the map below) Northern long-eared bats live with many other animals and plants. In the picture below there is a food chain with the plants and animals that the northern long-eared bat lives with. But it does not show the bat. The northern long-eared bat is a secondary consumer because it eats insects. No predators are known, but humans impact them by cutting down their habitats. Also, if a tornado hits, it could destroy the Northern Long-eared Bat and cause a lot of damage to their ecosystem. A tornado could destroy many insects and give the bat a shortage of food. That would destroy the bats. It would also make a shortage of trees, which is necessary for the bat's survival.
The producers in this food web are grass, bog birch, grey willow, aspen, white spruce, fephr, and aquatic grass. The decomposer is fungi. The primary consumers are squirrels, rabbits, willow ptannigan, and moose. The secondary comsumers are Bats, hawks, owls, foxes, lynx, wolves, and other predatory birds.
